Games: how to choose

Couples or party — decide first

A couples game is designed to be played by two people, in private, and is usually a prompt to do something you would both enjoy anyway. A party game is designed to be funny with a group, in a room, with clothes on. They look similar on a shelf and are not remotely interchangeable — a couples game at a hen party is awkward, and a party game between two people is thin.

What actually works

The games that get played more than once are the ones with the lightest rules. Anything with a board, a scoring system and a rulebook tends to get read once and shelved: the mechanics get in the way of the point. Dice, cards and simple prompt decks survive because they take ten seconds to explain.

Consent is a feature, not a mood-killer

A good couples game is a structured way to suggest things you might not otherwise raise, which is exactly why the ability to pass on a card without explanation matters. Agree that before you start. A game that pressures someone into a forfeit is a bad game, whatever the box says.

Buying for a hen or stag do

Consider who is in the room. What suits a group of close friends is different from a group that includes someone's mother, and the parties that go wrong are the ones where nobody thought about that. If in doubt, the milder option gets played and the filthier one gets quietly put away.
