Bondage Gear: how to choose
Buy the release, not the restraint
The useful question about any restraint is how fast it comes off. Buckles and clips beat knots; anything locking needs its key in the room, not in a drawer. Keep safety scissors within reach of whoever is not tied up. If a piece cannot be removed in seconds, it is the wrong piece.
Circulation and nerves
Cuffs go around the wrist, not across the joint, and you should fit two fingers underneath comfortably. Numbness, tingling or colour change means loosen now, not later. Wide, padded cuffs spread pressure and are safer than thin rope or anything that can tighten under load. Never leave someone restrained alone.
Kits versus pieces
A starter kit is the cheaper way in and tells you what you actually use — most people find two of the six items get used and the rest do not. Buy individually once you know. Kits at the very cheapest end tend to be thin materials and weak fittings; the middle of the range lasts.
Gags need a rule
A gagged person cannot use a safeword. Agree a non-verbal signal first — an object held in the hand and dropped is the standard. Never gag someone who is alone, congested, or has been drinking.
Materials
- Leather — durable and comfortable; needs conditioning, cannot be boil-washed.
- PVC and vinyl — cheap, wipes clean, less breathable and less hard-wearing.
- Neoprene and nylon — washable and forgiving; the practical choice for most.
- Metal — strong and unyielding, with the least margin for error. Know your fit first.
